GERG, the voice of gas research and development in Europe

9.12.2022

Created in 1961, at the dawn of the Europe of energy, the European Gas Research Group, or GERG, brings together the main players in the gas community across the continent.

In this context, carriers, distributors, stockers, research laboratories or research and development centers share common issues or carry out research projects for a pre-standard purpose. The aim is to homogenize regulations and standards at European level, for both equipment and safety.

Michel Hardy, Programs Officer, introduces this organization and discusses the role RICE plays, a key role in the partnership and international strategy of our research and innovation center.

RICE's role within GERG|A recent example: quantifying methane emissionsHistorically, GERG has been divided into two working groups: the first deals with all topics on distribution, use, transport and storage, and the second is dedicated to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). RICE has been part of the Distribution, Use and Transport group for years. Today, we are the leader and chairman of this group. As such, we are in charge of driving all the research and development activities related to these areas (and therefore to the concerns of our clients) at European level. Through the projects they carry out, GERG members aim to give the European level a common voice, and to progress towards a standards system common to all the entities that have supported and tracked each project.|The aim was to have a shared approach among gas operators in Europe to how methane emissions in networks can - and should - be calculated. To this end, it was necessary to show that we have a comparison and calculation tool common to all distributors and which allows the calculation of methane emission rates in the same way in all the countries of the Union. RICE's role was, first, to defend the approach that prevails on the French side and, secondly, to support on the Brussels stage the common position adopted by all European partners.https://ri.natrangroupe.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/GERG_logo_text-e1577098065847.jpg||||||
